DETERMINE WHAT YOU HAVE
Reel to reel tape (or open reel tape) came in many shapes & sizes. The most common to the average consumer was 1/4″ tape. Reel-to-reel tape also came in other sizes but was reserved mostly for the professional recording market. To determine what you have, simply measure the tape, the actual tape not the reel. It should measure 1 quarter of an inch in width. (Not thickness). We transfer all 1/4″ reel-to-reel tape to CD.
The Reel Size
Next, reel-to-reel tape came on many different sizes of reels. Most common among these are 3 inch, 5 inch and 7 inch. Larger 10 1/2 inch reels were also made but not as common to the home user. Recording studio demo tapes and radio/ television programs more commonly used these sizes. Here at Curtis Media Transfer we transfer all reel sizes. To determine what size reel you have, lay it down on a table and measure across the surface of the reel as close to the middle as possible, as if you are measuring a plate. Your measurement may not be exactly the measurements in our price-list, but it will be very close to one of them. (See photo above) Pricing here at Curtis Media Transfer is based primarily on reel size. Reel-to-reel tapes that are not full of tape are priced by how much tape, not how big the reel is.
Determining the Cost
When viewing our pricing please keep in mind that it is all-inclusive. For example a 7 inch reel is $48.00 to transfer. If your tape is longer than 80 minutes (all that a CD will hold) and requires, for example, 3 CD’s, you will get a set of 3 CD’s for $48.00. That also includes tape baking, track marking, splicing, repairing, hiss hum and noise reduction, data CD instead of audio CD, downloading or streaming your tapes audio and more. (Note: Only one output choice comes with price of transfer. Additional outputs are $8.00 each).
Return shipping is a flat $11.00.

Family & Reel-to-Reel
Back in the day you could make videos of your family events on a silent 8mm camera, but you could not record the sound. That s where reel-to-reel decks came in. Load the reel, hit record, and let the kids go nuts. Today those kids are in their 60’s and hearing their small voices is simply amazing! Hearing mom and dad in their 20’s or 30’s! Again amazing! No one thought back then that in sixty years these reel-to-reel tapes would be transferred into magic disc’s that played amazing sounds. Reel-to-reel decks were like priceless time machines with all their buttons and switches and spinning reels. They were time machines that mom and dad didn’t even know they owned. Only today do those spinning reels become tearful eyes and joyful amazement. That is of course, after they’ve been transferred to CD.
War & Reel-to-Reel
During the 60’s a war raged in Vietnam. Americas involvement caused many of our young men and women to be far from their family and in a very dangerous place. Communicating with family was next to impossible. Because of Vietnam’s close proximity to Japan, where most reel-to-reel decks were made, soldiers could get a reel-to-reel deck and tapes on the cheap. They would use these decks to record audio letters to mom and dad, or maybe that special lady. Can you imagine? Your son is off thousands of miles away in the most dangerous place in the world, you’re sitting at the kitchen table, you push a button and there’s his voice, “Hi mom, hi dad, I’m okay.” Amazing! Perhaps not a time machine, but a cure for the worried soul. Those tapes still exist today, hiding in worn old boxes and plastic tubs waiting to be heard again, ready to be that amazing time machine.
Marriage & Reel-to-Reel
Imagine it’s 1957, Eisenhower is president. You can get a gallon of gas for .27 cents and Elvis Presley is all the rage. But best of all it’s your wedding day. Friends and family are gathered, flowers are in place and there’s a TEAC reel-to-reel deck set up in the back of the church. Microphone placed just right. Now this is one of the most special days of your life. That’s why the ceremony is being recorded. You wrote your vows and he wrote his and soon all present will hear them. You will go from being boyfriend and girlfriend to man and wife. The ceremony starts and the record button on the TEAC is pushed in. From that point, your wedding day is being copied word for word via one microphone placed just right. You never imagined that in the year 2017 you would hear these sounds again. From the vows to the powerful “I Do”. It’s sounds almost unbelievable to hear it. You’re pulled back 60 years. You’re amazed.
